Verdict: PHM gets the format right and the paperwork wrong. Tablets genuinely out-deliver hydrogen water bottles — that part is real chemistry, not marketing. Hydrogen Water Safety exists partly to point out that bottles claiming 5–8 PPM do not deliver it — Henry’s Law caps dissolved hydrogen in unpressurised water near 1.6 PPM. We assumed tablets were the same story with different packaging.

They are not. Tablets do not electrolyse — they chemically generate hydrogen (magnesium + acid) fast enough to pressurise a capped container and genuinely supersaturate the water. Drink HRW‘s 12.4 PPM is independently certified by H2 Analytics (IHSA). That is roughly 8× what any bottle actually puts in your glass.

Read this chart carefully. The point is not that PHM is weak — the tablet format almost certainly clears the clinical range comfortably. The point is that PHM is the only bar here nobody outside the company has checked. In a category where marketing figures are routinely inflated, the distinction between a certified number and a claimed one is the entire decision. Hydrogen Water Safety has not measured PHM’s output either.

⚠️ The sealed-container rule — get this wrong and nothing else matters

  • Dissolve the tablet in a capped bottle, not an open glass. The pressure is what holds the hydrogen in solution. An open glass vents it as fast as it forms, and you drink magnesium water with a fraction of the hydrogen you paid for.
  • Drink immediately once it finishes dissolving. Once you uncap it, the clock starts. Minutes matter, not hours.
  • Use 15–16 oz of water per PHM’s instructions. More water means proportionally less concentration.
  • Cold water slows dissolution. If yours is fizzing sluggishly, that is why.

How PHM Tablets Work

The chemistry is simple and worth understanding, because it explains why tablets behave differently from bottles. Elemental magnesium reacts with water to release hydrogen gas; organic acids in the tablet accelerate the reaction, producing visible bubbles within a minute or two.

That reaction is fast and vigorous. In a sealed container it generates enough gas to raise the internal pressure — and under pressure, water holds far more dissolved hydrogen than it can at atmospheric conditions. That is the whole reason tablets can exceed the ~1.6 PPM ceiling that constrains every electrolysis bottle on the market. It is also why the capped-container instruction is not a suggestion.

There is a second, quieter advantage. Electrolysis splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, and in a poorly-built bottle the byproducts — ozone, chlorine — can end up in your drinking water. That is the central safety failure of cheap electrolysis devices, and we cover it in our ozone gas warning. Magnesium tablets produce no such byproducts. Whatever else is true of PHM, that risk simply is not present.

Patterns from published verified-purchase reviews. These are buyer reports, not measurements taken by Hydrogen Water Safety — no percentages, no invented counts, no concentration figures we have not seen certified.

  • Convenience dominates the positive feedback. Drop, wait, drink. No setup, no learning curve, nothing to charge or clean.
  • Travel use is the recurring theme — gym bags, flights, office drawers. The tube goes where a bottle cannot.
  • Some buyers report perceived improvements in energy and post-workout recovery. These are self-reported impressions, not measured outcomes.
  • Taste is generally described as neutral to faintly mineral.

Every PHM tablet is also a magnesium supplement, whether you wanted one or not — that is the mechanism. Take two a day, add a magnesium supplement you already take, eat a magnesium-rich diet, and you can quietly stack past your tolerance without ever intending to.

  • Have kidney disease or impaired renal function. Damaged kidneys cannot clear excess magnesium efficiently, which raises the risk of hypermagnesemia. This is the single most important contraindication in this category.
